We tend to forget God’s mercies and blessings in seasons of scarcity and difficulty. It’s when we focus on the troubles in front of us, losing sight of God’s faithfulness, that depression overwhelms us. No matter what’s going on in the present, God wants us to maintain an attitude of gratitude. 1Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV) says,In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Gratitude creates an atmosphere of hope and peace. Confidence and courage rise in our hearts when we remember that once upon a time, God showed up for us.

Gratitude isn’t only for the good times, but also for the bad times. God doesn’t ask us to give thanks for everything. However, God asks us to rejoice and give thanks despite our present circumstances.

In her book, “HEALING YOUR DEPRESSION,” Apostle L’Tanya C. Perry, MDiv. wrote, “One of the most significant actions you will ever take in a day is the act of sitting back and meditating on God’s faithfulness. So, let no day pass by without pondering on the goodness of God. Practicing constant and all-season thankfulness and cultivating a grateful heart are essential. Whether or not we know how the day will end, every day is a blessing to us. This is a fact that we should not even question. As you wake up, thank God for everything that crosses your mind.

In Psalms 143:8 (NIV), David said, “Every morning, let me hear about your eternal love, for I trust you.” Unlike many other men, David had no tolerance for a life devoid of appreciation. What a God-given blessing! Many things may be seen in his life that God accomplished. Was it because David didn’t have many hurdles to overcome? Naturally, no. He faced a slew of obstacles.”

There’s a remarkable example of winning with gratitude even in the darkest situations. Habakkuk 3:17-19 (KJV) says, Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Notice what happens when we maintain an attitude of gratitude according to the above Scripture. “He will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and He will make me walk upon mine high places.” God makes us unmovable, more potent than any challenge we face. Then, He takes us to the top. So, whenever depression and anxiety come knocking, choose to win the fight with gratitude.
