When someone gets knocked down frequently, staying down seems a good option. People feel the same way about depression. They get defeated way too often and decide to throw in the towel. So, they stop saying their daily affirmations, resisting negative thoughts, and meditating on God’s Word. They lose faith in all the strategies they’ve learned that can make them better. But the problem isn’t the strategy. It’s their consciousness

Depression comes with a consciousness that something is a particular way and will never change. So, if you want to overcome depression, you have to work on your consciousness. You’ve already lost when you believe your mind is overwhelmed by negative thoughts and you’re fighting for control. The truth is, you have to take complete control over your thoughts. You have the free will to choose what to think and what not to think. The ideas you choose affect your emotions, and in turn, your behavior.

There’s a pattern in the Scripture that reveals the power of being conscious of your freedom. For instance, Romans 6:11 (ERV) says,“In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive for God through Christ Jesus.”

This Scripture reveals that you have overcome sin or anything that tries to lead you down into the dark dungeon of defeat as a believer. Even depression doesn’t have power over your life, even when it appears like depression has a grip over you. You are alive and have a victorious life through Christ Jesus. Your job is to remain conscious of your freedom, and the consciousness of sin will lose its power. Likewise, no matter the situation, believe what God says about you. Focusing on His promises creates an independent truth over your emotions and enhances your mental life; God’s truth will become your experience versus your emotion.

Here’s an excerpt from Apostle L’Tanya C. Perry, MDiv.’s book, “HEALING YOUR DEPRESSION:” Although countless thoughts drop into the mind, not all of them are accepted. You prove your maturity by filtering every thought that goes through your mind. Learn to practice freedom after receiving God’s Word and Godly people’s counsel. Live in the fullness of the consciousness of God’s Word over your life. The truth will not be effective if it is not believed or practiced. We get a lot of counsel and solutions daily, but we practice very little of them. Likewise, choose only to act on liberating thoughts that resonate with truths in God’s Word.

If a disabled man gets healed and still decides to continue sitting in his wheelchair, he has no use for healing; he should have remained the way he was at first. Practice your freedom, and breathe freely and confidently. You’re not ignorant of your wound, but know that no wound encounters God’s Word and remains there. So, your basis for rejoicing is that you might not be the better person you would have loved to be, but you know God is working out something perfect in you. Hallelujah!
