When the Bible asks us to guard our hearts, it’s because there should be treasure inside. What’s this treasure? The incorruptible Word of God. Therefore, every believer must continuously open their hearts to God’s Word. We must have a rich depth of God’s revelation in our hearts. It must be as the light that shines in the darkness and overcomes it. Indeed, everyone who desires to live above depression must expose the darkest parts of their nature to the cleansing power of God’s Word
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
In her book, “HEALING YOUR DEPRESSION,” Apostle L’Tanya C. Perry, MDiv. wrote, “God’s Word can discern the thought and bring it into subjection to the mind of God. When you expose your wound to God’s Word, you can begin to experience healing. Acting tough and unaffected cannot help you get healed; everyone needs help, including you and the best support you can get is from the Word of God. One thing God’s Word does is that it shows you your state and a way to come out from that state.
When Jesus came to this world, the first thing He began to do was to reveal the natural state of man and the inadequacy of the law to bring a solution to the fallen nature of man. The Pharisees did not benefit from Jesus’ earthly ministry because they were not ready to be healed of their nature”
Do you desire healing in your soul where the wounds are deep? Do you seek transformation? Or perhaps you just want a revival, to be your old self again. The answer is the same for every category. You must be a lover of God’s Word. Why? Because true and lasting healing comes from God’s Word.Proverbs 4:20& 22 (ESV) says, “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.”
When you start to open your heart to the Word, you check yourself into God’s surgical ward. Exposing your wound to God’s Word is like opening yourself up to be treated. Yes, it’s an uncomfortable experience and even more discomforting because there’s no anesthetic. But it’s the path you must walk if you want to escape the iron bars of depression.
Usually, when we go through pain, the first thing we try to do is hide the pain. That’s why most people result to alcohol and drugs as a way to escape. People hardly want to feel pain, so they could do anything to avoid it. They use different influences to dull their senses, a sort of anesthesia. But avoiding it is not the cure; exposing it is the game-changer. Talk to your pastor, spend time with God’s Word and let the light shine into your heart.
